Bruce A. Bolt served as professor in the Deptartment of Earth and Planetary Science as well as the Deptartment of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley from 1963 until his retirement in 1991. He held a concurrent
appointment as Director of the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (formerly the University of Callifornia Seismographic Stations)
during that same period. Bolt served as consultant on a variety of national and international projects, drawing on his expertise
in the field of engineering seismology. He served for fifteen years as a Commissioner (and in 1986, Chair) of the California
Seismic Safety Commission. He also wrote several books on seismology and seismic engineering, including several heavily adopted
college texbooks.
